ECUADOR: Palacio hit by two waves of social unrest

A strike by 'outsourced' oilworkers which the government initially described as 'just' has mushroomed into a broader protest action following the declaration of a state of emergency and arrests of local authorities by the military. This has partly overlapped a separate strand of protests, the first directly targeting the Palacio administration, seeking to dissuade the government from signing a free-trade agreement with the US.
